A chandelier hung over the dining table is a big, fancy sign pointing to the heart of the action. While I have a soft spot for crystal chandeliers in the right rooms, modern styles are dramatic, with an appealing freshness.

One of my favorite things about modern chandeliers, and what makes them stand out, is the variety of shapes you'll see. They can be domed or bubble-shaped or leggy, and you can get creative and make one up yourself (Images 8 and 9). By veering from the traditional shape, these chandeliers can make modern rooms feel cohesive and provide contrast in more rustic or formal spaces.
