If you live in San Francisco and you're struggling this year, trying to decide whether to get a Christmas tree, a living Christmas tree, or some sort of alternative Christmas tree, we've found a really good option for you. The Dreaming of a Green Christmas Program.

Dreaming of a Green Christmas is a 5-year-old San Francisco program that plants living trees in neighborhoods that need them, after the holidays.

This is how the program works: You order your tree online at sfenvironment.org/greenchristmas for $95. The trees aren't your standard Christmas tree varieties (think southern magnolia, and small-leaf tristania) but the can still be lit up and decorated. Then you pick your tree up. Then after the holidays you return it to Friends of the Urban Forest offices and they plant it somewhere where it is needed and will live for a very long time.
