Dyson Designed a Ventilator in 10 Days to Help Coronavirus Patients

By request from the British government, James Dyson, on behalf of the company Dyson, ordered 10,000 ventilators to be made to help patients with coronavirus treatment. He confirmed this project in a letter addressed to employees, which he shared with CNN.

In the letter he wrote, “A ventilator supports a patient who is no longer able to maintain their own airways, but sadly there is currently a significant shortage, both in the UK and other countries around the world.” 

So, to provide immediate assistance to those in need, his company designed and created a brand new ventilator, called the “CoVent,” in just 10 days (yes, that’s all!) to send off to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for patients in the United Kingdom. 

“The core challenge was how to design and deliver a new, sophisticated medical product in volume and in an extremely short space of time,” Dyson explained.  “The race is now on to get it into production.” And once it is ready, it will be utilized to tackle the virus head-on.

“This new device can be manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume,” Dyson continued in the letter. And this new ventilator design will be able to really target the specific needs of those dealing with coronavirus and to help them heal as best as possible. 

According to a spokesperson for Dyson, these brand new ventilators will be released around early April, and Dyson also plans to donate 5,000 units to the international effort to handle the COVID-19 pandemic quickly and efficiently.

In general, there’s a shortage on supplies, like masks, gloves and ventilators for those in need and in critical care. So, this will be very helpful in providing assistance where needed. In addition to Dyson, another UK company, Gtech, is currently working to create ventilators (but no word yet on when those will be finished). It is good news to see various companies working on more designs to provide support. Every bit helps!
