Q:Help help help! Are there any synthetic rugs/mats out there that are (a) easy to clean, and (b) not ugly? Due to lack of space in our small SF home, our 11-month-old son eats in his high chair in our dining room. The wool area carpet in the dining room is rapidly becoming a bio-hazard from the amount of food that winds up falling/splashing/dropping/being thrown onto it. I hate the carpet anyway, so I don't have any problem getting rid of it, but my question is what to replace it with (continue reading below the jump.)

We need some kind of carpet or floor mat in there to protect the wood floor from the very heavy dining chairs (I hate those too, but one thing at a time!). I thought about Flor tiles but am concerned that it's going to take too long to install, and this mama is just way too busy/tired to take on a project. Basically my criteria are that the flooring be easy to clean and as eco-friendly (or at least non-off-gassy) as possible. Also, notwithstanding the fairly traditional look of the room, in general our style leans toward simple contemporary/mid-century. Any ideas? Thanks, everyone!

Editor: How about it, folks? Has anyone with this general aesthetic in your home found an easy-to-clean rug or mat that you like and that looks good?
