Elementary School Kids Design the Christmas Lights in This Scottish Town

Holiday decorations can run the gamut from charmingly casual to super sophisticated. But what would happen if you let kids take over?

In a small Scottish town called Newburgh, elementary school kids design the Christmas decorations, and the results are so charming, we’d love to see this be the start of a worldwide trend.

According to It’s Nice That, Newburgh has maintained this tradition for 19 years now, but nobody seems to remember how exactly it started. “It might have been there was a teacher from the local school on the committee that year, but no one remembers,” Shona Gray, head of Newburgh Action Group, which organizes the lights, told BBC Scotland.

Each year, the group holds a contest for a new light design to add to the collection. Local children submit their drawings, and the winning design is turned into a light display by the company Blanchere, which also designs Harrods’ Christmas lights. 

Poppy McKenzie Smith shared photos of several of the adorable lights on Twitter earlier this year.

Smith also said that Newburgh was unable to add an extra design this year because of a lack of funds. A campaign on Go Fund Me appears to have met its goal, but it’s still accepting donations.

We hope the town will be able to continue this sweet tradition next year!
