Emeco’s Icon Chair by Philipe Starck

Move over Deep Throat, this morning in our email, we found pictures of the new Philipe Starck / Emeco stacking chair – dubbed Icon – that is coming out in April at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. We also found this airy quote from Starck:

My idea for the new Emeco chair was to design nothing, just transmit the phenomenon of Emeco. The new design is balanced, coherent and minimal; there is serenity. When I close my eyes and think of a chair, I think of this chair – it is an Icon.”

Boy, is he good (at PR). Anyone who can say “design nothing” in a sentence and yet consistently turn out hot chairs for Emeco makes us jealous. But seriously, although we have some issues with Starck’s ubiquitous creations, his work with Emeco has been terrific.

Icon will retail for $360, will be made at the Emeco factory in Hanover, PA, and consists of 80% recycled aluminum, which means that it meets the LEED criteria for an environmentally sound product. (Thanks, DT!)
