Enjoying the View from 4 Homes in the Hills

Pop culture puts forth the idea that the culmination of one of the classic Hollywood dreams is living in a house in the hills. I took advantage of the recent AIA Home Tours to step inside 4 homes and get a taste of the Los Angeles version of a Sex and the City lifestyle.

House #1: Briarcliff View House
Architect: John Pugliese, Assoc. AIA - Cambia Designs LLC
I drove to the first house, which was located in Los Feliz. The architect/owner, John Pugliese, just completed the architecture program at UCLA and his personal home was his first major project as an architect. He had been a docent for the AIA house tours for years. He stood proud as he showed off his personal retreat.

House #2: SteelHouse
Architect: Marc Angelil + Sarah Graham. FAIA - agps architecture
The SteelHouse is undeniably minimalistic and industrial modern. I liked its architectural appeal and use of classic modern furniture. However, I found it a little cold — I prefer a little more warmth to a home.

House #3: Oberfeld Residence
Architect: Zoltan Pali, FAIA - Studio Pali Fekete architects (SPF:a)
Now this is a dream house! The 9,000+ square foot house is located in the Doheny Estates above the Sunset Strip. For the non Los Angelenos, this particular location in the hills is where many celebrities reside.

House #4: Lago Vista Guest House
Architect: Aleks Istanbullu, AIA - Aleks Istanbullu Architects
The guest house is by far the smallest home on the tour. I found the lemon and lime accent colors charming. One of my favorite elements in the home is the floor-to-ceiling bookcase with the library ladder to access the books on the top shelves. I wouldn't mind moving into this guest house!
