Epic Animal Battles: Who Would You Like To See Duke It Out?

Epic Animal Battles: Who Would You Like To See Duke It Out?

In a charming show now on view in Brooklyn, two artists imagine a series of animal match-ups: lobsters vs. butterflies! Zebra vs. horse! Rabbit vs. frog! Which animals would you love to see painted in hand-to-hand (hoof, paw, etc.) combat, and who do you predict would win?

As featured on Hyperallergic, artists Oliver Jeffers and Aaron Ruff have created their own world at Invisible Dog gallery in Brooklyn, The Exploded Mind Of Mullholland Hwang. The show is inspired by "a fictitious boy and his fascination with battle, with nature‚Äôs quest for the domination of the biggest and the best, and show the sensitivities of a young mind exploring the world inside his own head." I think the lobsters and butterflies are my favorite, both for the grace of the painting and my fascination with how that grudge match got started. Their bunny vs. lambie is pretty cute, too: the struggle for Springtime Cuteness Domination!

Discussing animal rivalries gives me a chance to mention one of my all-time favorite works of art, Bad Day On The High Sea by Brandon Bird. Sperm whale vs. giant squid vs. Tyrannosaurus rex vs. lightning vs. the sea itself. All I know is my money is NOT on the T. rex.
