Eye on Singapore Design: Nathan Yong
It’s wonderful to come across a designer whose design qualities extend beyond a specific niche. One such designer has proven that a good eye for design can encompass several distinct looks while maintaining high-quality function.
Born in Singapore in 1971, Nathan Yong received his Master in Design degree from the University of New South Wales. He has received numerous design awards including the prestigious Singapore President’s Design Award for 2008 Designer of the Year. He has worked with a number of clientele such as Design Within Reach, Ligne Roset and Ethnicraft. In Singapore he has three showrooms that house his three different lines, or styles, of furniture.
V Furniture specializes in custom made sofas and upholstered seating. Classically tailored, these contemporary pieces are exquisitely made in Malaysia using high-quality materials such as American walnut and goose down filling. Clients, both retail and professional, can visit the beautifully appointed showroom, very calming and relaxing, adorned with a bit of quirkiness like an antique bicycle and a pair of Eames plastic chairs.
A visit one floor below to Grafunkt puts you in a totally different mood altogether. The showroom is full of fresh, white powder-coated steel furniture, bold strokes of goldenrod and turquoise. Where V Furniture was warm and soft Grafunkt is hard and edgy. But the same attention to detail and quality of workmanship is apparent with contemporary and functional pieces.
Folks displays the same workmanship as the others yet mostly relies upon wood as it’s predominant material and has a very down-to-earth yet modern look. Like his other designs, Mr. Yong has a great sense of organization and precision with his pieces so that his furniture combines eye-catching design with practicality.
