Five Ideas for A Beautiful Small Space

The first thing you might do when confronted with a tiny space is some measuring. You have to make sure you can actually fit all the basics. But don't stop there...make even the smallest of spaces beautiful. Here's how:

1. Use the ceiling. Hanging a special mobile, lanterns, or vintage lighting will draw the eyes up and utilize your vertical space. Consider wallpapering the ceiling or painting it a different color from the walls. (Example: Mallory Gray's room)

2.Use single, horizontal wall shelves to house beautiful objects or collections. The shelf will lengthen the space and add visual interest. In a child's room, a picture rail housing a few beautiful children's books will have the same effect. Hanging bunting or a series of photos on a string will have a similar effect. (Example: DIY Striped Shelves & Wall)

3.If you have a window in your space, buy or make curtains that give the illusion of a much larger window. Choose a beautiful fabric and let it drape ceiling to floor. You might also consider hanging a curtain above the window frame for the illusion of height. (Example: A Baby Bachelor Pad with a Bit of Blue)

4.Create a focal point. In a bedroom, the bed is the obvious choice, but a beautiful antique armoire or mantle will also work. Don't be afraid to go big on this piece. Having a small space doesn't necessarily mean you have to have all small scale furniture. In fact, one larger piece will oftentimes make the room appear larger. Another idea is to wallpaper one wall of the room to create a focal point behind the bed or elsewhere. (Example: Will's Red Bed)

5.Careful editing. Of course, any space will look smaller and less pleasing to the eye if it's cluttered. Choose your focal point and any display objects carefully. Keep things simple, bright, and airy. A rule of three usually works well. Choose three objects or furnishings to focus the eye on and let the rest blend into the background. (Example: My Room: Shane)
