Joanna Gaines’ Tip for Making Sure Home Updates Look Authentic
On her hit show “Fixer Upper,” Joanna Gaines is involved in every detail of the home renovations, from moving the walls to selecting the throw pillows. And while she certainly has a signature style (hello farmhouse shabby chic!), she knows that each house is unique, befitting a custom design plan.
In Season 3, Episode 2, Jo is renovating a house built in the 1920s and immediately she realizes the arch on the front door should be the inspiration for the makeover. Her tip is to let the architecture inform the decor so it’s all harmonious. This kind of architectural detail is special, so carrying it throughout the home highlights the original and creates a sense of consistency and history throughout the space.
Not only did Jo add arched case openings between the living room and dining room, she had custom cabinet doors made with an arch on the front to make the built-ins on either side of the living room fireplace and the dining room sideboard feel as though they were original to the house. (The shelving inside was original, but the doors were new.)
Another place she added an arch was on the master bedroom headboard. She had it built by her fabulous furniture maker, Clint.
But having a professional furniture maker in your phone contacts is not a necessity. Depending on which kind of architectural feature you’re looking to highlight, you can most-likely find a DIY tutorial online. Does your house have exposed wood beams? Find a dining table made out of reclaimed wood. Is your apartment building Art Deco? Change your dresser knobs to gold or brass geometric pieces. Are you residing in a real-life log cabin? Grab a (faux) bear skin rug and cuddle up with a cutie! Or use a buffalo check patterned blanket to reupholster a chair, and then cuddle up with a cutie. Choose your own adventure! You’re living in a log cabin, you’re obviously adventurous.
You may be thinking, “Isn’t this on trend right now to put super modern furniture in more traditional homes?” Yes, but what Jo is saying is embrace the unique characteristics of your house’s structure and find inspiration there. A sleek sofa is going to look good in pretty much any space, but it’s not what brings in the character. Each house is distinctive and should be celebrated. So go forth and find your metaphorical arches.
