Plant parenting can be daunting, but you don’t have to go from zero to jungle right away. In fact, Joanna Gaines has the perfect way to get started if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

In season 1 episode 3 of “Fixer Upper,” Joanna is helping clients fix up a home…with an atrium in the center of the floor plan. Instead of demolishing it, she knew it was a great opportunity to add greenery in the form of an herb garden.

Herb gardens are easy to care for and thrive with about six hours of sunlight and water, so they’re perfect for small spaces, random (but fabulous!) atriums, or apartment living. Depending on how much space you have, they can flourish in a pot near sunlight, a window box, or planted in the ground. You can even get the kids involved:

The best part about herb gardens are you can use them—mint for mojitos, basil for pesto, and parsley for everything! A sweet touch Joanna made was to add garden markers in each box to label which herb was what. You can DIY these easily or pick up a cute set online. And because you can use your herbs everyday, you probably won’t forget to water them.
