The Fixer Upper Spinoff: Here’s What We Know So Far

Viewers who are devastated that they must to bid adieu to HGTV’s Fixer Upper after season 5 shouldn’t fret too much: remember that there’s a spinoff coming (did you forget??). Here’s what we know so far.

Set to hit airwaves in May of 2018, Behind the Design will be a half-hour show that skips the home renovation process that Fixer-Upper was known for, and instead focuses solely on Joanna’s design process, according to Country Living.

“In this new show, you get the behind the scenes—the pillow choices, the paint color, the softer side of design—to give diehard fans more detail on something that they love,” Kathleen Finch, Scripps Networks Interactive chief programming officer, told Adweek.

According to Joanna, the show was inspired by the constant questions about home decor coming from Fixer Upper viewers. Instead of tackling homes just with Chip, she’ll have her own team of Magnolia Home Design staff who help her create vibrant, welcoming atmospheres.

“Joanna Gaines shares an in-depth look at how all the design decisions, details, and decorating come together before the final reveal of each house,” the show’s description reads. “She also reveals some never-before-seen design elements and shows how she, Chip and her design assistants work to meet their clients’ needs and style while overcoming design challenges that pop up along the way.”

Filmed simultaneously with season 5 and originally set to air back in 2017, Fixer Upper: Behind the Design will allow viewers to delve deeper into the properties the Gaines’ tackled.

“We’re already shooting all this content with Chip and Jo, so let’s keep the cameras rolling when she’s deciding if the pillows should be blue or gray,” Finch told Adweek.
