There's a new swap in town! So many baby and kids items have a lot of life and utility left once your family is done with them. You may have a group of friends, relatives or local parents who pass things around or you may have found a great consignment shop in your area. If not - welcome Freepeats to the scene.

Already operating in Atlanta, DC, Philly, Boston, Chicago and Houston, Freepeats is coming to a city near you so parents and expecting parents can find and donate free items like high chairs, strollers, clothing, formula, diapers, maternity clothes, etc. It's the Freecyle of the parenting world.

In the coming year Freepeats (a project of Baby Cheapskate) expects to open online local boards for at least thirty cities. If you become a member during the free enrollment period (generally the first month of your city's launch, your lifetime membership is free. Otherwise, you pay a modest one-time fee of $4.95.

Here's a sample page from the Philadelphia boards so you can get an idea how it works. See an item you'd like and contact the poster. If the item's still available you can arrange pickup. Create your own posts when you have something to pass on. Established members (who have put something up for offer before) can also create "wanted" posts.

The next cities to launch (3/1) are New York, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and Detroit followed by Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Indianapolis and Nashville. To find out when Freepeats is coming near you, sign up to be notified on their website (box in right-hand column).

Free stuff - good for your pocketbook, good for the environment, good for your karma!
