Freia’s Cozy, Colorful Corner in the Master Bedroom

Room Size: Tiny! Her corner is probably 5′ x 5′ feet at most, but it is part of our main bedroom (that part is probably 6′ x 8′)
When I first discovered little Freia’s nursery, I never would have guessed it was but a tiny corner of the master bedroom in mom Audrey’s two-bedroom rental. With the other room occupied by her two older girls, Audrey knew she had to think outside of the box in order to make their sleeping situation work. While she could have simply placed a crib in the grown ups’ sleeping space, Audrey was excited to finally be able to decorate a space especially for one of her babes, as she hadn’t been able to with her older children. With a little creativity and space-planning, Audrey was able to create a special space for three to happily share…
How would you describe the look and feel of this room?
Relaxing, cozy and happy. My husband is from Denmark, and we wanted to include a lot of white and nice textures to give the room that cozy and calm Scandinavian feel. And with that, touches of bright colors and happy patterns to give the room personality (and because they make me happy.)
What is your favorite piece or element?
All of the handmade gifts and little DIY projects that were made just for her by my friends and myself. Like the “Little girls with dreams become women with vision” calligraphed print by my friend Jessica from Coco + Mingo, the little cloud pillow, the heart blanket, the flamingo wall stickers, and wallpaper stools. They make this room unique just like my little girl, and I loved spending time on these projects for her. Also in love with the ice cream photograph by Max Wanger that is hanging above her bed. He’s my favorite!
What was the biggest challenge decorating this room?
The size of the room – it’s tiny! I decided not to have a changing table in there because of that and had to settle for a much smaller rocking chair. Also, because baby shares her room with us it was important for the nursery corner to complement our bedroom and, well, not to be overly baby-ish. We needed Daddy and Mommy to feel like they belong in this room as much as baby.
What do your friends say about the room?
My friends love how bright and happy it is, and they can’t believe such a tiny space feels cozy and bright at the same time.
Do you have any advice for parents creating a room for their child?
Just like for your home – try to collect things that you love over time for the nursery rather than buying everything in one go – if you do your room might look too “matchy matchy”. And these special things that you pick up along the way will become little gems that you’ll treasure forever. Also, try to think about what you really need rather than having everything come from the baby store. If you can keep the clutter at bay your room will be a lot more calm and relaxing.
If money were no object, what’s your dream source?
I love everything by Oeuf – amazing aesthetics for a nursery! But I am always happy about finding ways to not spend a million and still make a room feel special. 🙂
I love the color palette – what was the inspiration?
This picture. The colors and mood just bring a smile to my face every time I look at it, and I wanted that for the nursery. Happy, summer, sunshine-filed vibes. Also, here’s some more inspiration I shared on my blog.
