We don't really like garbage bins. They end up being smelly and leaky most of the time. You have to clean the garbage can out so many times that it gets annoying in the end. Plus, the smells can be ghastly. There is nothing worse than coming home from work and realizing that the first thing that you are smelling is your garbage. Sure, this is a lesson that we can take to heart and empty out our garbage more often, but still, there must be something that can be done to make life easier, right? The Minus garbage can is right out of science-fiction and will keep your home smelling great!
The Minus garbage bin was created by Turkish designer Cem Tutuncuoglu. It's a garbage bin from the future, making sure that no bad smells will pollute your home. First, it fires an antibacterial UV light at the offensive waste, and then it keeps the waste frozen it until it's time to throw it out. The porthole on top will give you a status readout on what's happening inside this technological bin. Our only problem with this thing is that it will use a lot of energy to freeze the waste. Using a compost heap might be stinkier, but it would be more eco-friendly.
It's true that stinky garbage is annoying. We like the fact that actually two different ways have been used to get rid of the odors. As for the carbon footprint of this garbage bin, well that's something else. We understand that cooling food and freezing it takes up a lot of energy. That's why having a garbage that freezes waste might not be a viable option for most homes. It sounds more like something that would be used in industrial settings or in labs. Still, it's an intriguing concept. If the amount of electricity it uses is low, it could be worthwhile. Using UV lights to kill bacteria is a good idea and it's probable that garbage bins using this will come out pretty soon. [via Tuvie, images by Cem Tutuncuoglu]
