Gardening Trends: Food and Pickling

If you're planning on expanding your edible garden this year, you're not alone. According to research sponsored by the Garden Writers Association, 37% of households surveyed are planning to do the same thing. That's good news for the environment and seed companies.

According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, "Food trends such as pickling and home canning, and interest in Spanish and Latin American flavors, global street food and antioxidant-rich produce play a role in what home gardeners are growing."

So that means we can probably look to seed companies to broaden their offerings to match what we want to grow.

In 2010 seed producers are predicting which seeds will be most popular. Seed pioneer Renee Shepherd of Felton, has a few favorite picks: the 'Spanish Padron' pepper, and Amsterdam Seasoning' celery.
