Gender Differences: Scrapbooking for Men

Gender Differences: Scrapbooking for Men

Apr 19, 2007

Are men croppin'? According to an article in the York Dispatch they are.

Scrapbooking has been a popular hobby for women, and if you ever visited a scrapbooking store you can certainly see that women have been the target market - lots of pink and frills! But smart companies are starting to market scrapbooking supplies and merchandise at men as well, and men are responding - over a million men made a scrapbook last year.

Tractor stamps, NASCAR themed merchandise, and other so-called 'macho' scrapbooking supplies are selling well. While the idea the men scrapbook doesn't seem surprising to us, the notion that somehow the hobby has to be macho-ed up for them is a bit annoying. Still, it is good to see an industry dedicated to the preservation of memories making room for dads alongside mums.

A lot of people get into scrapbooking because of an event in their life - weddings and babies are popular scrapbook themes, and according to this article, men's scrapbooking bachelor parties are a new trend. What do you think? Are you a scrapbooker? Is your partner? Is it a gender thing? A parenting thing? A midwestern thing?
