Ok, I’m getting ahead of myself. This isn’t the first time I’ve sung the praises of Milo Baughman and his impressive body of work. His long term collaboration with Thayer Coggin produced some hugely popular modern designs, many of which are still hunted down and coveted to this day. And even while surrounded by it’s fellow sleek, chrome counterparts, the 1188 dining chair definitely still stands out.

This 1970’s model from Apartment Therapy Marketplace is made of chrome and vinyl, and is available as part of a set of 6, should you wish to complete the full wining and dining vision. In a world where it seems like you’re constantly forced to pick between comfort and style, this padded beauty has got your back. Literally.

So now that you’ve been properly introduced, it’s time to choose one of two paths: score this vintage piece for under $500, or travel down the road of no return… that is, brand-new pieces that come complete with all the sticker shock you could want. Design Within Reach is selling new versions of the 1188 model for around $1,350 apiece, aka almost three times the cost of this vintage one. If you’re determined to get that dream team of six chairs, the 1970’s set will set you back $2,910, while the full price lineup comes in around $8,100. Just think of all of the insane dinner parties you could afford with over $5,000 left in your pocket!

So while there’s obviously nothing wrong with the appeal of buying brand new things, it’s nice to know you can also get something with retro style and for a great price. I think Milo would be proud of you.
