Every so often, I fall into a rut with my home where both the necessary tasks of home upkeep and the joy of decorating become overwhelming and anything but joyous. I've found the best cure for household ennui is a simple — and enjoyable — one.
I invite a few guests for a night or a weekend and enthusiasm for my space comes back in spades!
Here in coastal New England, there are so many gorgeous summer escape destinations within a short drive that we get a lot of guests this time of year — and that sure as heck isn't a bad thing. What starts out as a cursory clean of the bathrooms and guest rooms, inevitably turns into setting out fresh flowers, finally hanging pictures that have been sitting on the floor for months, and a refreshing motivation to tackle all the languishing corners of my home. The expectation of visitors always pushes me to look at my home with fresh eyes and imagine all the ways it could be better instead of just hopelessly wishing it would clean itself.
