The Getty Museum Asked Twitter To Recreate Famous Works of Art at Home, and They Delivered
Museums worldwide may be closed to the public in an effort to thwart the spread of the coronavirus. But the Getty Museum in Los Angeles doesn’t believe museum closures should stop people from appreciating art. The Getty asked fans and Twitter followers to recreate and photograph their favorite art pieces with objects lying around the house, and wow, did people deliver.
“We challenge you to recreate a work of art with objects (and people) in your home,” the Getty tweeted on March 25. The rules are simple: “Choose your favorite artwork, find three things lying around your house, recreate the artwork with those items.”
The Getty shared a few examples of top notch art recreations, including a spotted horse made from dirty clothes, Monet’s straw huts built from cardboard boxes, and a modern-day interpretation of a half-eaten breakfast portrayed in oil paint.
And the goodness just kept on coming.

These side-by-sides are almost too uncanny.

The snake plus the red shoelaces shows dedication to the challenge.
@GettyMuseum feeling a bit constricted indoors, so we had to pause for this Nahua-Coyote inspired musing from Florentine Codex Book 11. pic.twitter.com/wZv3mBB8tA

These are, as the Getty responded, too “relatable.”

The Getty even chose a few of their own personal faves.
As long as we’re stuck in self isolation, there’s plenty of time to get involved in the Getty’s challenge. Replicate your favorite piece of artwork and add it to the replies under the Getty’s original tweet.
