Gideon’s Rough and Tumble Room
Name: Gideon James Johns
Age: 3 years
Location: Stafford, Virginia
Mom Maria says she “wanted a departure from a standard boy’s blue and any kind of theme.” Instead, she wanted the room to reflect Gideon’s personality. With hand-me-down furniture, a few items from the antique store down the street, and some old boating maps of her father’s, she created a cohesive and fun space for her “rambunctious boy.”
Inspiration: Gideon’s name means “mighty warrior and destroyer” and his personality reflects his name!! So it had to be rough and tumble just like his nature! His baby room had more of a western theme, so I kept the color from that because it suits him so well and I love it! I cut up my Dad’s old boating maps for art and pulled the color scheme from them.
Favorite Element: The swing chair ( which I tried to wedge into the corner to limit the amount of damage he can do) and bull horns (from the antique store down the street), both elements equally sum him up, free-wheeling and tough!
Biggest Challenge: Finding elements for the room that will grow with him and keeping items in the room to a minimum to help with frequent clean-ups!
What Friends Say: They love the maps and swing chair!
Proudest DIY: I made the roman shade in the window from his old duvet cover to help with light filtering. Great project from Jenny’s tutorial.
Biggest Indulgence: Actually the furniture is all hand-me downs, so this room really was budget-friendly.
Best advice: Don’t be afraid of nontraditional colors for kids rooms and to feature their toys instead of hiding them! Have fun with kids rooms; they are the best rooms to decorate freely!
Dream source: Something I’d love to see in the room in the near future would be an antiqued or old fashion school desk, where homework can get done!
