This is my grandmother's first holiday season with an iPad, and like any good, slightly nerdy grandchild, I'm happy to purchase apps for her that I hope she'll like. What makes my list? Word and card games, apps for crafting and cooking, an atlas, and of course apps for her to sketch with.
Letterpress: Every family member with an iOS device loves this game, so it seems like a logical pick for a word game that my grandmother will also love. The only downside is not being able to give her the unlocked, paid version, which is acquired through an in-app purchase. Free
Card Shark Collection: With pretty much every variation of solitaire (her favorite) I can think of, this app will be a great choice for giving her a wide variety of card games to play without any annoying ads. $2.99
Craftsy: My grandmother loves to learn new things, and with this app she'll be able to learn how to do a variety of crafting and baking techniques. While the app itself is free, a wonderful present will be to gift a class in something she's been wanting to learn. Free
The Photo Cookbook - Family Recipes: My grandmother is a wonderful cook, and she loves to share her recipes with her family. With this app she'll be able to convert some of her recipes to a digital format and easily share them. $3.99
National Geographic World Atlas: One of my earliest memories of my grandmother is her pulling out the atlas and telling me the story of where she was born and how our family came to America. My grandmother loves maps and any excuse to pull out the atlas. With this app she'll get a great atlas that really takes advantage of the Retina screen on the iPad. $1.99
Procreate: My grandmother loves to draw, and this app is a great companion to Paper, which I've already introduced her to. With this app she'll have a bit more brushes to use, as well as layers, and I can see her really having a lot of fun with it. $5.99
