Giving Your Home Office An Expensive-Looking Makeover

While it's safe to say that most home office furniture from big-name stores like IKEA tends to look alike, it's actually not that hard to make it look unique and more expensive-looking with a few tweaks, whether it be your desk or shelving...

One of the easiest ways of giving your tired desk a makeover is by simply using a glass panel over it. We've found that this works well for modern desks and older desks. It's just a matter of getting the right sized panel from a hardware shop or supplier. Make sure that it's the right dimensions and then you've got yourself a brand spanking new-looking desk.

Another way would be to re-varnish the desk. Although this may be time consuming, we've found re-varnished desks look really good, especially when you take your time to get the best results. Make sure you strip the paint from the desk before trying this and you could also try your hand at staining it before varnishing it again.

Lastly, transforming your tired bookcases into something more spiffy isn't going to be easy, but it's possible if you've got a plan. JC from Sweden found some expensive-looking bookcases and decided to hack his IKEA Expedit to get the same look. He basically took his Expedit apart and cut the shelves to the length he wanted, and then reassembled them using the provided tools and wood glue. It took some time but the finished look has that certain random quality that works really well. For some reason, this reminds us of Tetris, but either way, if you take your time, the end results will update the look of your home office.
