Going Dutch: 5 Beautiful Blogs From The Netherlands
The Netherlands is in an interesting spot, geographically. Dutch life, at least within the purview of the internet, seems to borrow influence from both Scandinavia and Western Eurorpe. The result is a design aesthetic with the lightness and simplicity of Sweden, the chic aura of France, the functionalism of Germany, and a special brand of quirk that could only be Dutch…
I’m hooked on Chapter Friday (pictured above). Amsterdam-based founder Yara Michels calls it “a girls’ guide to an awesome and successful life,” though I think projects like this DIY splatter poster would be enjoyed by anyone. Her blog’s mix of home, life, and career is refreshing, offering plenty of advice that translates well outside Dutch borders. Don’t miss how she made her bedroom feel like a boutique hotel, and the Sharing a Business and a Bed series, where she catches up with couples who run businesses together.
If you’re a fan of minimalism, check out My Dubio, a design blog from Joyce Croonen of Nijmegen, Netherlands. Her photos are gorgeous— bright white and artistic— and remind me that even magazines stacked on a shelf can be beautiful. I can’t help but love flipping through her posts, a mix of fashion and interior design, and especially adore this peek at her minimalist black-and-white bedroom. There’s also the occasional DIY thrown in- I think we all need to try this rope magazine holder immediately.
If you really want a taste of the Netherlands, check out Vosges Paris and Amsterdam Next, sister blogs from the same editor that collect the best in Dutch design, food, and travel. Amsterdam Next has a local focus, recommending plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shops for planning your next seven trips to Amsterdam (I’ll be staying at INK, after seeing these photos). Vosges Paris showcases all the pretty that we can admire from afar- just check out these beautiful plants or this perfectly coiffed corner of editor Desiree’s bedroom.
It’s worth taking a visit to the Love Aesthetics home page so you can see just how much the blog’s founder, Ivania Carpio, lives up to the name. The blog itself is beautiful to browse through. There are plenty of posts showcasing stark minimalist interiors, but I rather like the DIY and lifestyle sections of this site, where you’ll find this DIY leather office folder clutch, this simple plexiglass book display, and The Minimaslist Gift Guide, with some great ideas for people who have quite enough stuff.
Avenue Lifestyle is a blog run by Holly Marder, a Delft-based contributor to many of your favorite blogs stateside. Holly showcases her styling and creative work—like this dining room wall art project with Ixxi—and interviews other creatives and designers about their work and process. She also features some great personal DIYs- I’m bookmarking this Christmas post right now so I can copy her gift wrap and mix up a big batch of her cabbage and apple chutney recipe to give as gifts.
