This Is How Much It Costs to Live 10 Minutes From the Golden Gate Bridge
There’s a lot to love about the Bay Area. Whether you want to hit the beach, dine at world-class restaurants, or visit Fisherman’s Wharf, there’s a little something for everyone. One of the most famous attractions in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937, the bridge cost $35 million in principal and $39 million in interest to construct. The bridge is about 1.7 miles in length and contains about 88,000 tons of steel. Today, the bridge sees more than 10 million annual visitors.
Wondering what it would be like to live close enough to the Golden Gate Bridge to catch a glimpse of it daily? The Marina District neighborhood of the city is in close proximity to the bridge and is an area full of restaurants, bars, and shopping.
According to Neil Canlas of Coldwell Banker, there are plenty of places in this area to enjoy views of the bridge, including picnic and lounge areas on Marina Green. Another highlight of the Marina District is the Palace of Fine Arts, a historic structure that hosts art exhibitions and also serves as a venue for events, such as weddings.
As you might imagine, home prices in this area are reflective of its massive appeal. The median home price in the Marina District is $1,802,500, according to Trulia. Using the guideline that your monthly mortgage payment should be no more than 28 percent of your salary (and using a 10 percent down payment and current interest rates), you need to earn a yearly salary of $497,743(!) to afford to buy a home there.
Despite the many attractive qualities of this area, there are some downsides to consider as well. Canlas cites heavy traffic, especially on the weekends, as one of the negatives of living in the Marina District. He also says that prices at local restaurants and bars are inflated because the area is such a popular tourist destination.
