Welcome to Good News, a new column that’s part-link roundup, part-community gratitude journal where we can all share the feel-good moments from the past seven days and end our week on a high note.

Happy Fri-yay, everybody! It’s Tara, your News & Culture editor, here to start your (hopefully long!) weekend off with some super good news. I’ll tee it up, but feel free to share links, personal news, photos—whatever you’re excited about this week—in the comments.

Here in the States, it’s the unofficial start of summer, aka Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully you have a few days full of plans that include fun, sun, food, family, friends, grillin’, chillin’—or even staying home alone if that’s more your vibe (no judgement, that’s extremely my vibe).

I spent the early part of this week in NYC at Apartment Therapy HQ with my fabulous coworkers for a mini editorial retreat, and after some great brainstorming, planning, and in-person hangs, I’m excited for what’s to come on the site for the rest of 2019 (no spoilers, but I’m particularly jazzed about July). Our office also overlooks David Bowie’s incredible outdoor terrace, so that was a fun discovery.

Anyway, on to the good news!

May 23 was the 143rd day of 2019, so Pennsylvania celebrated 143 Day, which was Fred Rogers’ code for “I love you.” The state encouraged neighbors to spread a little kindness.

The Ashkar School in India replaced tuition with plastic waste, which encourages students to bring 25 pieces of plastic instead of money for their weekly fees.

Morehouse College’s 2019 commencement speaker, billionaire Robert F. Smith, pledged to pay off the entire graduating class’s student loans. The students are already thinking of ways to pay that generosity forward.

Engineers at UC San Diego have developed a wearable patch that can be integrated into clothing that provides custom heating and cooling to the garment, hopefully reducing energy usage.

Baltimore’s League for People with Disabilities transforms into a nightclub once a month, creating an inclusive space for folks to socialize.

And finally, from my “saved” tab on Instagram. This video made me lol. Hope you reach this level of relaxation at some point over the weekend!

What’s making you happy this week? Share your good news in the comments!
