Biodegradable Disposables for Daughter's Birthday?

Biodegradable Disposables for Daughter's Birthday?

Q: I am looking for "green" birthday ideas. My daughter is turning two in three weeks and we are throwing her a party at the little gym near my home. On the invitation I requested "please go green and skip the gift wrap" only to have my husband's 93-year-old grandmother call me and say "It's rude to request money!" The major issue is serving food and drinks…

...I can not bring glass cups and china to the gym so that leaves me with disposable options. I have been looking around but haven't found anything that is either made of recycled material or that decomposes quickly.

Editor: Rikki, we love that you want to throw a green birthday party! We know of EarthShell products as one option. These disposable plates are made from renewable starches from potatoes and corn, water, and small amounts of recycled fiber. They dissolve in water and will completely biodegrade in compost or soil within a two-year period. Other more durable options would be Preserve Tableware. The plates and the tumblers are made from 100% recycled plastic, and are also recyclable in communities that recycle #5 plastics.

Any other ideas for Rikki?
