Good Questions: Painting the Coffee Table

Good Questions: Painting the Coffee Table

A (not dumb!) question from K: "This might be a dumb question, but I have a coffee table that I am going to paint, but I have no idea whether I should paint it black or white. My bookshelves are white, the walls and sofa are grey, and I'll be putting down white-ish/grey, teal, and orange flor tiles as soon as I can afford it."

"Obvious pro for black is that it won't show dirt as easily, and a con against white is that there might be too much white around already (there's a white dining room table across the room, since it's just one big room split into living/dining areas).

Since I've just moved, I've obsessed about every detail for so long that I think I'm just out of ideas with this thing.

Thanks for any advice!

First of all - nice job so far in the new place. The storage looks well thought out, the colors are nice and that armchair is fantastic.

Not to complicate matters, but we might actually go for a color here instead of the black or white...we were thinking a buttery yellow OR lipstick red lacquer.

Here's why - a black seems like it would be heavy with the dark sofa and there is plenty of white going on already (especially when you factor in the white dining table that you say is just across the way).

The right color would energize and work with all the colors you have going on already - the sofa, light walls, white bookshelves and teal armchair - and would really make the (already nice looking) table into a showpiece. The colors suggested above also have a touch of a vintage flavor that compliments the armchair style.

All of that said, if color is out and the choice is really just black or white, we lean toward white...AT Design minds - weigh in here - what would you choose for K's paint project?
