Welcome to Mary Jo, our fourth Northwest territory reader submission to our Green @ Home giveaway, and our first from Washington. Jump below for pics and details.

Tell us about 1 green move/tip/solution that you've implemented: In order for us to get the benefits of our solar panel installations, we brought down the amount of energy we use in a day. The biggest move that we down to achieve this was to replace our refrigerator. Even though the old refrigerator wasn't old and it was energy star appliance, but we switched it out with a SunFrost one. We went from 710 KWH per year to 107 KWH. To our surprise, most refrigerators actually take a lot of energy to heat it for the defrost cycle as well as the heater is underneath which heats up the main cabinet and that means the main cabinet has to work to keep cool because of the rising heat. With this refrigerator, the heater/compressor is on top and so the system itself does not have to heat more than it needs to.

Extra Green Move: One of our other green moves is taking out our clothes dryer. Since we live in the Northwest where the sun doesn't shine too much, drying clothes outside only happens in the summer. So we invested in a clothes spinner that takes most of the water out of clothes, Spin-X (which is pictured below) and then finish the rest of the drying on a wooden dry racks. We also replaced the clothes washer with a Staber brand which takes less energy and lower water consumption to use. We have other green moves we do such as insulating the big windows to keep the heat in and we insulated the walls with recycled filler / insulation. We have low flow toilets. Rain barrels to collect water for the lawn and garden. We've installed solar panels on the roof and bank our unused electricity with the energy company. Banking usually helps us in the winter where we don't obtain much solar energy. We also have solar vacuumed heating tubes to heat our floors, room radiator panels, and our water tank. We have solar attic fans as well. Our coolest step we just did was buying an electric car for our daily commuting and around the town - Zenn Car. In Washington State, these neighborhood electric vehicles can go up to 35 mph legally. Most states can only go 25 mph. It takes less than a penny per mile. A few other things... solar oven (using the sun to cook salmon, cookies, soup, veggies, reheating pizza..), electric mower and weed wacker, and wood stove for that extra heat. Think that's it.

Thanks, Mary Jo!
