Welcome to Joe - the first reader submission to our Green@Home giveaway. Following the lead of the AT editors, he snapped a few pics and sent in a few of the ways he is living a bit greener@home. Joe took the opportunity to start over in a more eco-friendly way when he made the move to a new apartment. Photos and ideas below...

Green Move #1:Organize and Donate before a Move

Instead of hauling a whole bunch of stuff you don't need, organize and donate. Figure out what you need in the new place and donate the rest to a local charity or re-sale shop. Let your stuff be recycled. Taking your stuff to be redistributed in your car will save money (both gas emissions and gas prices), then it would to add all of the extra stuff into a moving van or truck. Save your space in the new place and the environment at the same time!

Green Move #2: Green Goods for Pets

Don't forget about your pets. I thought my little ones need to be eco-friendly as well. Their litter is replaced with heathly litter (does not contain un-known chemicals or release airborne toxins) and natural food (kitties do not need high fructose corn syrup of hydrogenated soybean oils just like us). I also donated all of their toys in the hopes to not transfer dander and mold or other toxins into the new place in hopes to keep the air quality the best it can be. Also, not a bad idea to have them cleaned before moving into the new place. One of the best perks of moving is starting anew.

Green Move #3: Low VOC Paints

Low VOC paints. Not high and not no. high is bad for your body and the environment. no-VOC is bad because the quality is not there and requires more coats of paint, which equals more paint cans and brushes. Go with low-VOC to reduce waste and chemicals.

Next Biggest Challenge/Frustration:
The Washer/Dryer

Thanks, Joe!

Simple, straightforward ideas are welcome, like how you deal with your recycling bin in a small kitchen, and so are ambitious projects - like your amazing green roof. We hope to have a big archive of ideas to inspire us all by the end of the month.
