Green Ideas: A Kinetic Battery

Green Ideas: A Kinetic Battery

Sep 27, 2007

The power of movement. That's what Yael Miller set out to capture with her concept of Kineticel, which was an entry in Metropolis Magazine's Next Generation contest.

What is it? Well at first glance it appears to be a simple battery that captures energy from movement. Think a piece of gym equipment that charges your AAs. But it's not just about rechargeable batteries to use around your home.

What struck us was the dual-use concepts that were appropriate to your home's design. For instance, the Kineticel could be installed on your toilet, take energy from the flushing motion, and then be used to charge bathroom-related electric devices, such as your razor or electric toothbrush. Or installed on the rocking chair in your nursery, a Kineticel battery could be used, in turn, to power your baby monitor. As moving creatures, pretty much anything in our home could be fair game for energy capture, and could allow us to power a lot of our home accessories without drawing from the power grid.
