Hacked IKEA Expedit Standing Desk With Built-In Look

It's spectacular to see a hacked-together IKEA frankenstein desk that, after it's been cut apart and pieced together a thousand times, looks so much like it was meant to be in this home from the beginning. And really, the whole assembly is pretty simple. DIY website Ikea Hackers fills us in with every step.

It might be hacked, but this isn't a cheap desk. All in all, its frankenstein parts come from 2 2x2 EXPEDIT Shelf Units at $39.99 a piece, 2 5x1 EXPEDIT Shelves at $59.99 each and one 73-inch LACK shelf for $29.99. That brings the grand total of this project up to more than $230 after hardware and supplies.

But custom doesn't come cheap. This desk looks like it belongs in the space, with birch colored IKEA shelves perfectly complementing the built-in kitchen cabinets right next to it. And there's plenty of space. The added LACK shelf on top gives plenty of room for a large monitor, two large speakers, a lamp and a separate MacBook Pro laptop. And don't forget the tons of storage space you get from 13 separate cubby holes.

If you want to build a standing desk like this yourself, head over to Ikea Hackers for the full step-by-step directions or check out some of our past posts about standing desks for other styles and solutions:
