Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there I’m an artist from Houston, Texas and I work as an art adviser for a local interior design firm. Though trained as a classical oil painter my side hobby is decorating, especially for holidays. I fell into the Halloween influencer realm on Instagram, and I’ve found endless inspiration from the other creatives and artists—really magical, wonderful people—I’ve gotten to know. Through that I’ve been able to hone my decorating chops and it’s been a total thrill to explore! My Instagram account is @thehalloweencollector, which features my vintage and repro collection (it’s embarrassing how much I’ve amassed over the years!) along with my decor and creative ideas. I live in my three-bedroom townhome with my 6-year-old terrier poodle mix (“toodle”) Toby.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Boho goth chic
Favorite room: My favorite room right now is my Halloween office. I’ve always wanted a room solely dedicated to my Halloween collection with an atmospheric vibe. My other homes have all been too small, so I was excited about finally creating a Halloween sanctuary once we moved here!
My style is definitely vintage, and in thinking about a concept for the room, my childhood growing up in New England came to mind: the magical autumn leaves, cozy colonial inns, and the dusky enchanting October evenings. So I painted the room navy (color is Naval by Sherwin-Williams) and suspended leaf strands from the ceiling to create an autumn canopy vibe. It works so well with my Halloween collection. I love how it came out!
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? The popcorn ceilings would magically smooth themselves out.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The latest things I’ve found for the Halloween office are vintage inspired Halloween decor pieces from Michaels. Their line this year is soooo right up my alley; I couldn’t resist snagging five new pieces (including a wicked cool pumpkin blow mold reproduction).
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? Jack Skellington from “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
Any advice for creating a home you love? Go with your gut—it’s never wrong. Also ignore trends and what is the “right way” to decorate. If you like it, it’s right. And if you want a year-round Halloween office, go for it. I think the idea that holiday decor can only be displayed during holidays is so limiting. Why not have it out year round if you love it!
