Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice and Other Spooky Spaces, Reimagined for 2018
With Halloween on the horizon, you’ll be sitting down to watch all of your favorite spooky movies and TV shows—but Halloween movies and shows aren’t just fun for a good scare, believe it or not, you can pull some great design inspiration from even the creepiest places. E-design company Modsy really got into the Halloween spirit and decided to design some rooms all inspired by their favorite seasonally-appropriate films and TV show interiors. Take a look below to see how they turned other-worldly aesthetics into modern, real-world spaces.

Hocus Pocus
The Sanderson Sisters perform all their witchy spells from their home in Salem, Massachusetts—naturally—so Modsy pulled from the Modern Colonial aesthetic for this Hocus Pocus-inspired living room. Modsy’s Director of Style Alessandra Wood says that the space was “inspired by early-American furniture and the room styling marries fairytales and the real world.” To achieve this look, start with the color palette: rich purples, deep greens, and golden yellows paired with dark woods give the room a moody look without being over-the-top. Modsy added a statement wrought iron chandelier to give the room a special touch. But the most important pieces here are the broom and cauldron. These are professional witches, after all.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Modsy wanted this room to match the aesthetic of Tim Burton’s creepy holiday musical, and so decided to “incorporate spooky, whimsical elements with an eclectic twist.” Wood’s advice for achieving this bold look is first, “don’t be afraid of mixing patterns, colors, and shapes,” like layering black and white graphic prints with brightly colored furniture. No one really wants to live in Halloween Town (or maybe you do, I don’t know your life), but you can have your very own living room that gives a nod to its aesthetic by combining geometric lines with curved furniture to get that whimsical feel. Of course, not everyone can have a Christmas tree in their living room year round, but if you’re a diehard fan of the film you should at least put one up as part of your Halloween decor.

Rosemary’s Baby
You may never want to watch this scary movie again—once is enough, thanks very much—but there is some interior decorating inspiration in the production design that you might want to make a part of your everyday life. The 1968 film, about a woman who gives birth to the spawn of Satan, was shot in a real NYC apartment decorated for the time. To recreate this look, Modsy recommends filling the space with “authentic mid-century” furniture and decor, while also utilizing an earthy-toned color palette full of olives and mustards. To make the room a little cozier than the movie could ever, bring in warm textiles like a shag rug.

Beetlejuice
How are you going to do a Beetlejuice-inspired room and not make it almost exclusively black and white? You have to. And so the team at Modsy does. Aside from some plants to bring the room to life (get it?), everything else sticks to a bold black and white color palette that plays off of our main man’s iconic striped suit. The Modsy team took inspiration from the movie’s embodiment of “80s trends with loud statement pieces” to create a room that Woods calls fit “for a contemporary enthusiast.” Her advice for Beetlejuice fans recreating this space is to “look for sleek pieces with contemporary finishes” to go with the geometric patterns elsewhere in the room. Looks like the perfect place to reenact the “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” dinner party scene. Without the shrimp cocktail hand monsters, preferably.

Stranger Things
From one Winona Ryder vehicle to the next: The Byers family’s living room from Netflix’s Stranger Things isn’t the chicest room on the list, but there are some elements that are easy to recreate in your own space, not including the supernatural alphabet communication device written on the wall—unless you’re into graphic art, which in that case, why not go all in on this design? Otherwise, feel free to replicate the ’80s look of the room with patterned wallpaper and eclectic vintage finds. Mix and match patterns to give the room a more “collected” feel. Just keep your eyes peeled for demogorgons and shadow monsters—they’ll really ruin your vintage vibe.
