A Dated Kitchen Got a Timeless Makeover That Doubled the Storage Space
A few months ago, we were excited to share this kitchen and all the plans we had up our sleeves to give it a fresh look. Today, we’re thrilled to share the reveal of this happy kitchen renovation!
If you remember from our previous post, these homeowners experienced a little bit of flooding, which affected everything in the space. The house is a bit older, and the kitchen is original to the house. So we were excited to bring in a little bit of that charm they were looking for to reflect their style and more of that timeless feel they wanted.
We love that the outcome is a happy kitchen.
This space needed to work hard and include a better, more functional layout. We were thrilled to bring in an island that can be both functional and offer seating in this area. Along with the lights, it did a lot to anchor the space and make the entire layout feel more functional.
Before, their kitchen was already partially demoed because of the flooding, but it gives you a good idea as to the layout of the kitchen. If you ask us, the change is full of eye candy and modern updates to make it timeless.
One wall contained another doorway into the side of their home. However, there was an additional larger opening in the dining room, which felt a bit unnecessary. So closing that up gave us an opportunity to switch the layout around a little and provide more storage for them in the form of that much-needed cabinetry.
Their kitchen wall contains the other side of a massive fireplace and holds their oven and microwave. Because the brick wasn’t going anywhere, our solution was to lighten it with a mortar wash. It’s a great addition to the space because it allows the brick to exist seamlessly while also giving it a more cohesive look with the kitchen. Now, it feels like an integral part of the design.
This space is now so happy and bright that the title for this project just felt appropriate. We adore the color.
And a look at the dining room space before we also gave it a fresh overhaul.
The existing furniture and light were great, but they weren’t serving the space well in terms of functionality. So it was fun to help them update it all on this side, too. Their china cabinet was given a new lease on life with a fresh coat of paint and some grasscloth backing. A round table helps with the circulation of the space while allowing plenty of room for all things hosting or just a low-key family dinner.
The new light’s airy design helps anchor everything, keeping with the space’s overall vibe. The chairs are a bit of a nod to the rest of the space, which really ties the two together with their laid-back feel. We love the splash of color that they bring.
We adore that they can gather around this space for Saturday morning pancakes or quick dinners before bed after a busy day. Such a sweet space for the heart of a home!
It’s all in the details: Here are a few of our favorite elements within the space!
The paint colors: For this space, the perimeter cabinets were finished off with Sherwin Williams’s Quietude and the island with SW Shoji White. This was their existing wall color (fun fact that makes me laugh: I didn’t know this upon selection, so it was a funny coincidence, or it’s like I have ESPN or something #namethatmovie) so it tied in with the existing house beautifully.
I love that our fabulous cabinet maker allows us to pick any custom color. This is a rarity in our location. We went with this soothing hue to add so much more charm to the room, along with the warm white island.
These simple lines and traditional silhouettes play so well with their charming home.
Hardware is of course from D. Lawless. If these pieces look familiar, it’s because we love them so much; they’re in our butler’s pantry and laundry room. They’re like jewelry to the space, and we love the elevated feel they bring to this classic finish in the kitchen.
Barstools: We’re smitten with these barstools from Ballard. They’re stable enough for younger children, and durable enough, too. We have their chair versions at our house and love how these have held up. Bonus: The cushions are washable.
We adored working with Ferguson Showrooms to provide one-of-a-kind finishes and appliances that have to work hard for the kitchen.
Sink/faucet and accessories: Everyone knows that the sink and faucet duo are one of the hardest-working fixtures in the kitchen. These pieces are built to last, and have so many amazing pros. We’re thrilled to work with these awesome brands that will last for years to come.
We love the way this sink fits seamlessly into their space!
The right lights in a space are like jewelry to an outfit. So, the incomparable Kichler was the right brand for the job.
These island lights helped anchor the space and polished it all off with those vintage/classic vibes.
We also included plenty of their downlights in the space, so the room is now well-lit, no matter what the time of day or weather.
As usual, one of our favorite elements is these under-cabinet lighting strips. They create such an amazing ambiance that we recommend them to all our clients. Their minimal design makes them nearly undetectable when not in use until they’re needed to spread that glowing light. We love that they are dimmable so that you can add as much light as needed.
This chandelier in their space is the pièce de résistance of their dining space as far as we’re concerned. Just enough character to add so much to the room in a delicate way.
Wallpaper: We went through quite a few samples before settling on just the right one, but we love searching so our clients can be happy with their final look. Sometimes that’s what it takes! We loved finishing off their dining room with this wallpaper here. It elevates the space with an entirely different charm.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our little tour today! We’re always so grateful to our wonderful clients for trusting us with this process from start to finish and allowing us to be a part of their home journey. We’re also so thankful for our amazing readers. If you’re here, that’s you! We couldn’t grow our little business without you. So, thank you so much, as always, for stopping by!
