Sometimes small and simple makes for the best parties! Kate tells us about Sophie's birthday get together: We were on the east coast for Sophie's birthday this year, so my husband's family threw a wonderful 2nd birthday for our little girl. He told me it was entirely unnecessary to have another for our local friends when we got home... I almost cried. I've been reading Ohdeedoh avidly and waiting another entire year to throw Sophie a birthday party was unthinkable! We compromised: a small, simple, inexpensive get-together with family & two of Sophie's friends.
Sophie LOVES watching buses out the window- and riding in them- so for her invitations, I sketched a bus on the front of a simple white card with the details inside, sealed the bright pink envelopes with tiny polka dot masking tape, and addressed on a mustard yellow bordered label.
I had ordered some brightly colored straws, fun cupcake liners, and a Japanese fan off Etsy months ago, and I added to that some paper ribbon in bright colors. I cut the bottom out of the pink gingham cupcake liners and strung them to give a twist on traditional streamers. Because I wanted it to be extra festive and I didn't have much prep time, I used the paper ribbon as the rest of the streamers. Our favors were photos of Sophie with each guest. The cake had the same bus I made for the invitation... though it was much easier to use a pen to draw a bus than icing!
The party was simple, but it was also colorful and festive. Sophie received a tea set for her birthday, so the toddlers ate their cake slices happily off the new dishes, and sipped pretend tea from tiny cups.
She was a happy little birthday girl!
