Every year, the folks at HGTV create an HGTV Dream Home, which is more than just a typical show house—it’s also a giveaway. That’s right: You could win a fully furnished 3,650-square-foot home in Whitefish, Montana, right on the edge of Glacier National Park. (The prize package also includes a 2019 Honda Pilot Elite and $250,000.) But even if you don’t win, there’s plenty to see here—and lots of ideas worth stealing for your own home.

A chandelier in the bedroom

Who says fancy lighting has to be reserved for the living or dining room? A chandelier hanging over the bed will give your sleeping space a real sense of occasion.

A built-in headboard full of books

In one of the secondary bedrooms, a built-in headboard is lovingly surrounded by a built-in wall of books. The little niches for the nightstands (and built-in lamps) make the design especially streamlined.

A big window in the kitchen

A lot of current kitchen designs forego traditional upper cabinets, replacing them with open shelving, or sometimes with nothing at all. This is a great way to give your kitchen a lighter, airier look, but it’s also a bummer to lose all that storage. This kitchen strikes a nice balance, with the row of cabinets above the sink omitted to allow for a window that fills the space with light.

A perfect mix of dark and bright

Dark walls in a room can be really striking—witness the rich navy that covers the walls (and ceiling!) of the Dream Home’s bonus room. To keep things from getting too dreary, there are lots of windows and lots of light accents: white tables, white lampshades, and white furniture. The blond wood floor provides a nice contrast with the walls and helps brighten up the space.

Walls that aren’t walls at all

There are lots of lovely spaces in this house, but the living room really takes the cake. The piece de resistance? A windowed wall that opens up to a view of the mountains beyond. If you love the indoor/outdoor lifestyle, consider incorporating something similar into your next remodel—a wall that isn’t a wall at all.
