One of the downsides to city living is the close proximity to people and their bad behavior. Actor and pop singer Hilary Duff can’t take it anymore, and is calling out one horrible neighbor’s inconsiderate habits on Instagram.

The Lizzie McGuire and Younger star took to her Insta Stories on Wednesday to complain about one dude in particular and ask for advice.

“Calling all New Yorkers with asshole neighbors—really open to any advice you have,” she says. “My neighbor smokes cigarettes and weed all night long. My apartment reeks. Seriously, what do I do?”

Duff is definitely not alone; our advice column, Ask Alice, has addressed this concern on multiple occasions. In one question about cigarette smoke, Alice advised that “the first step is to make him aware that it’s bothering you. Nicely.” Perhaps Duff already did that and it didn’t work, but we wouldn’t exactly call this extremely public blast nice.

Addressing a separate question on marijuana smoke, Alice told the OP that after alerting the neighbor nicely and they kept doing it, she says, “I see no reason you need to bend over backwards trying to help these guys out when they can’t be bothered to go outside to smoke. If it continues, I’d just go ahead and alert management. You are the ones with a vested interest in keeping your building a nice place for everyone to be.”

We’d also suggest checking the building’s policies, too, and see if smoking is permitted in the bylaws. If not, then Duff would have a proper channel to make a formal complaint.

She also mentions the neighbor and his love interest fight loudly and scare her young child—and unsurprisingly, we’ve been asked that one, too. Since it’s past having a nice and casual conversation, Alice suggests logging the noise complaint with the building’s management.

Have you dealt with any of these bad neighbor behaviors? Tell us in the comments.
