One major problem with shopping at big box stores is that we rarely know much about what we buy there. Often a "Made in _____" sticker is our only clue to a product's history. But knowing about a product's origins is the best way to determine whether it's a responsible choice.
Elegant Roots, an upscale (i.e., pricey) online gift boutique, gets it. From their "values" page: We believe that thoroughly understanding a product's story enhances its meaning and adds value to our customer's purchasing power.
Their home decor section is full of some nice gift ideas. While many of them are a little too expensive for our current tastes, there are a couple of items with reasonable price tags that we thought we'd share.
However, more than being blown away by the products they carry, we're just impressed with the set up of Elegant Root's web site. Each product's description included loads of information -- who made it, where it comes from, what it's made of, and why it is a socially- and environmentally-responsible choice. We wish more companies would sell their goods this way.
