Our Holiday Tradition: "December Mice"

Our Holiday Tradition: "December Mice"

Many families have traditions that they grew up with and have enjoyed passing on these rituals to their children this time of year. One of my own family's traditions for the holidays is something I had never heard of before I married into my husband's family and I would love to share it with our readers. I learned about it the very first year we were married when a small package arrived in the mail after Thanksgiving. Inside were two small mice (of the stuffed variety, not live!) and a short note from my mother-in-law.

We call them our "December Mice".

Each year on the evening of November 30th, our mice come out of hiding and take their place on a shelf or mantlepiece - each person in the family has their own mouse. The very next morning and every morning after for the month of December, we awaken to find a small token gift under each mouse. Things like a chocolate coin, or a sticker sheet... yesterday, my mouse was sitting on top of a latte! Every year, the mice disappear again after their December 31st morning token is left. It has become a tradition that started with two mice, and a mouse has been added each year a child has been born and is enjoying their first holiday season with us.

Readers - what are some of your families holiday traditions? Please share!
