Get the Look: Home Decor Inspired by “Friends”, “Sex and the City”, and More Favorite TV Shows
Inspiration can come from anywhere, and especially from your favorite TV shows. As the recent Pottery Barn “Friends” collection proves, some series never go out of style—even if they’ve long been off the air. While we’re still dreaming of a “Golden Girls”-themed home collection (so much rattan!), there are plenty of ways to get the look of your favorite fictional homes without browsing a dedicated collab. From the Girls’ laid-back living room to Carrie Bradshaw’s eclectic apartment, we’ve rounded up some of the best decor style ideas stolen from five fan-favorite TV shows.
“Friends”
From Monica’s brightly-colored apartment to Phoebe and Rachel’s Pottery-Barn-but-don’t-tell-Phoebe-it’s-Pottery-Barn space, “Friends” has a number of home decor moments that will inspire your own look. Even better? Pottery Barn itself has released a new Friends line so you can score home stuff inspired by the show (including that apothecary table!).
We can’t talk about the apothecary table and not include it—this replica of the one in the show (watch the episode if you haven’t, but also… what?) is seriously perfect for housing all of your odds and ends, while also serving as a coffee table.
There’s no doubt that Joss & Main’s Mehdi armchair resembles the one that Joey and Chandler once fought over (which led to the iconic “Could I be wearing any more clothes” moment). If the style is a little too ’90s for you, the retailer has a ton of similar ivory armchairs that feel a bit fresher and more contemporary.
Another find inspired by Monica’s living room, this ottoman doesn’t quite have the same vintage feel as her velvet version—but it comes pretty close. Distinctive and classic, it’ll stand out in any space.
“Golden Girls”
Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia all lived in Blanche’s Miami home—and it was the epitome of retirement chic. A lot of rattan and leafy and floral patterns were featured in their space, and it’s actually pretty easy to create that look at home. Picture it…
The faux-bamboo chair popularized by the Chippendale style is the perfect accompaniment to any dining room table. While traditionally this type of chair would be dark brown, the white paint gives it a more updated look.
Everything about this chair screams ’80s Miami, from the old-school swivel to the tropical print and pink color. The Golden Girls had rattan chairs with similarly patterned cushions, and we can totally see this in their modernized living room.
Tell me this isn’t the most perfect “Golden Girls”-esque coffee table? The rattan gives it that throwback look, but the simple, unique base has a more contemporary flair.
“Sex and the City”
“Sex and the City” was (is?) the epitome of New York living for many people—from Carrie’s chic apartment where she housed sweaters in a stove to Charlotte’s artsy Park Avenue dream space, the characters’ homes had some serious style.
Carrie’s white lacquer desk was actually simple and sensible, yet it looked very glam amid everything else in her studio. You can have your own “I couldn’t help but wonder…” moments with this budget find from AllModern.
Carrie had a couple of chairs that she moved around her apartment, including one MCM armchair that provided the backbone for her living room seating. This find from Joss & Main has the same natural color and versatile style.
We can’t forget Carrie’s purple bedding. Her bed brought the entire apartment together, and the purple color was a perfect nod to her creative nature. Do the same in your bedroom with this textured purple duvet.
“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”
You can’t think of the “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and not think ’90s. The show was the pinnacle of cool, and Aunt Vivian and Uncle Phil’s immaculate and tastefully decorated home was the center of every episode. Here, some of the freshest looks from Bel-Air.
The Banks’ cream living room sofa was the cornerstone of both the home and every episode. You can create a similar neutral starting ground with this tasteful sofa that looks like a modern upgrade of the original.
Everything in the Banks home was generally neutral (lots of whites and creams) with a minimal aesthetic—but there was also plenty of greenery. Check off all those boxes with this neutral planter.
In later seasons, the household featured three stone tables in front of the seating area, acting as a contemporary coffee table. Mimic that look with an updated silhouette thanks to this white side table found on Anthro.
“Mad Men”
The Upper East Side penthouse that “Mad Men” ad man Don Draper shared with his second wife Megan was like an advertisement for mid-century cool. Sophisticated and masculine, the spacious apartment was big on neutrals with colorful accents. Here’s how to mimic the Drapers’ mod style.
This streamlined sectional is the perfect seating for a cool cocktail party or if you just want to kick up your feet and relax after a long day at the office. Need a sofa that’s a little smaller? Try this style from Walmart.
Don and Megan added little pops of color to their living room with vibrant accent pillows in shades of turquoise, gold, and burnt orange. Make your space look more fab with these velvet versions.
Unlike the Drapers, not everyone has space for a huge bar in their home. But you can make like Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce and keep a bar cart on hand. We like this vintage-style one from Overstock, which features three tiers for holding spirts and barware, or if you’re a teetotaler, you can use it as a plant stand.
