U.S. Homeowners Judge Their Neighbors For 3 Key Things, Study Finds
Have you ever had a sneaking suspicion that your neighbors are secretly judging your home? Bad news — they probably are. In a new state-by-state study, home services site Angi found that when it comes to passing judgment, Americans are most likely to side-eye three things: a messy yard, a cluttered house, and a smelly house.
If you don’t have the greenest grass on the block, don’t worry! Angi found that 46 out of 50 states are more concerned about the overall cleanliness of an outdoor space, as opposed to how nice the lawn is. So roll up your hose, store your garden tools, put away any stray toys or knick knacks, and your curb appeal will rise instantly.
Still, there are a few outliers when it comes to lawn care. If you live in Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, or Wyoming, that’s what your neighbors are most likely to judge.
As it turns out, keeping clutter at bay is just as important indoors — who would’ve thought?! According to Angi, the number one aspect that 43 out of 50 states judged when it came to home interiors was cleanliness. So if you find yourself apologizing to guests for the mess more often than not, it might be time to get serious about getting organized. Need some help getting started? Meanwhile, the second most-judged aspect of home interiors was smell. It doesn’t matter how gorgeous your decor is — no one wants to hang out in a house that reeks of a stinky dishwasher or your cat’s unclean litter box. If a strange odor has been wafting over your house, take initiative and get to the root of the problem now. In the meantime, at least there’s no shortage of candles, diffusers, and air fresheners to get your home smelling better in no time.
