Name: Jenny, Konstantin & Simone Peysin (plus their dog Murray)
Location: Windsor Terrace — Brooklyn, NY
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned
Jenny and Konstantin were married in 2015, moved into their beautiful Brooklyn apartment in 2016, and recently welcomed baby Simone into their lives and the home they share with their quirky pup, Murray. Learning how to incorporate a growing family into an apartment is always a challenge for couples, especially those living in snug New York City spaces. Luckily for the Peysins, Jenny is an architect, and was able to navigate their recent addition with a particularly creative space renovation.
Fast-forward several months later: the renovation is complete, baby Simone has her own mini-room, Jenny’s office space remains intact, and Konstantin still has plenty of storage for his tools and other things (albeit now in the new over-the-closet storage built vertically into the other bedroom). Jenny designed and supervised the renovation, which has helped her family craft a home based on their needs as their circumstances have changed. Jenny and Konstantin have approached integrating Simone and her necessities into their space with an eye for editing and streamlining, without making it feel as though no baby lives there at all. In the end, the details remain playful, consistent, and perfect for parents and baby alike.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Mid-century modernism with a touch of eclectic industrial.
Inspiration: Charles and Ray Eames, Carlo Scarpa, Luis Barragan, natural materials, and our travels.
Favorite Element: All the diffused natural light we get from being above the tree line in a corner apartment with many large windows on two sides. This was basically the selling point.
Biggest Challenge: Definitely keeping clutter to a minimum considering the limited footprint of the apartment. This is made exponentially more difficult with all the baby gifts.
What Friends Say: “Did you draw this?” re: the large chalk octopus. The plan was to have a chalkboard for menus and ideas. However, we got attached to the octopus (which Jenny did draw!).
Biggest Embarrassment: After Murray desecrated our previous beloved living room rug, we decided it was time for a new one. We settled on an attractive shaggy white rug. The following week Murray proceeded to vomit on it twice. Also, the rug sheds a lot…and so does Murray.
Proudest DIY: Our reclaimed wood countertop made out of a bowling alley floor. Not only because we had to lug it up four flights of stairs, but also meticulously plane, sand and refinish it.
Biggest Indulgence: You can say it was having a baby. This necessitated transforming the second bedroom’s walk-in closet into a de-facto third bedroom and adding storage space all over the apartment to compensate. We are lucky to have 12 foot ceilings, which allowed for creation of several “over closet closets.”
Best Advice: Start with white. A fresh coat of white paint is a good base for any space.
Dream Sources: BDDW, Uhuru, Design Within Reach, ABC Carpet, Workstead (amazing Brooklyn-based cabinetry and lighting designer), and Bec Brittain lighting. Too many to list!

We have been trying to match the existing white wall paint for the past year…with little success. We will eventually repaint the whole place with Benjamin Moore Snowfall White.
