Soogee wears a lot of hats. The mom of three kids, she also helps her husband run a couple of family businesses. The couple are also avid foodies, and they enjoy making delicious Asian- and European-inspired cakes and pastries. She’s also a decorator and realtor! When Soogee is not busy with kids, business or baking, she enjoys browsing through design inspiration and documenting her finds on Instagram. She’s also a self-proclaimed interior blog junkie, which came in handy when they designed this house.

Soogee and her husband considered renovating an existing home, but after some math, came to the conclusion that building from scratch was the right fit for their family and their budget.

“Before deciding on building, my husband and I home shopped and most all homes in the area were stuck in the ’80s. I calculated the cost to renovate to my specific taste, but quickly realized I would be spending well beyond what it would’ve cost to start from scratch. I wanted a more modern home.”

So Soogee gathered inspiration from interior blogs and Houzz to create her home’s look.

“I knew this home would be our family’s home until the littlest one graduates from high school,” writes Soogee. “I wanted to keep some things classic and timeless and not too trendy. But the home also needed to match our family’s personalities.

Also, functionality was important. Each room had to have a purpose and had to be utilized well. My last home had a formal dining area, which was used twice a year. So we did not make room for a formal dining room here. Instead, I incorporated a large nine-foot island that the kids are always sitting at, and adults always congregate at during dinner parties.”

Our Style: Scandinavian-modern

Favorite Element: Three big, almost counter-to-ceiling height windows in kitchen area facing beautiful mature trees.

Biggest Challenge: While staying true to my style, having re-sell value in mind. Most buyers like traditional homes in the area we live in. So, even though I wanted to go more modern, I had to tone it down by going a bit more towards the traditional style.

What Friends Say: Love seeing a different — a more modern home — in a town filled with traditional homes. Never knew white walls can look warm.

Biggest Embarrassment: Stopping by the home every single day of build. I’m not normal.

Biggest Indulgence: The Kohler freestanding tub in the master bath. The simple, clean, modern, yet beautiful lines of the tub had me SOLD! Our family actually uses it a lot and it is my kids’ favorite place to take their bath.
