Interior designer Gabrielle Aker and her husband Zack have embraced the downtown LA loft living lifestyle, seamlessly introducing a warm atmosphere into an open space filled with rough bricks, stainless steel and concrete floors.

There is plenty to look at between the amazing furniture and bookshelves, like the lovely large abstract painting that Gabrielle created that hangs above the bed. Perfectly placed pops of verdant greenery add softness and nature to the space, complementing the abundant light that pours in from large windows.

And Los Angeles itself has influenced their design aesthetic. “I think Los Angeles culture has played a part in my love for plants and greenery. It’s important to me to bring the outdoors in. especially living in downtown where there is not a lot of green space.” Gabrielle believes that nurturing her plants keeps her more connected to nature, and it’s hard to disagree with the cozy space she and Zack have been able to create.

Lastly, living in the heart of a vibrant urban center can also have an effect on one’s decor choices: “I think Los Angeles culture has contributed to my love for white. With all the craziness in the city, white walls and white homes create a sense of peacefulness in a space.”

Favorite Element: The branch “chandelier” I made hanging above the dining table.

Biggest Challenge: Figuring out how to configure a space without walls and finding contentment with our design when we constantly want to change it.

What Friends Say: It’s unique and magical

Biggest Embarrassment: The amount of cords we have that I’m always trying to hide. I HATE cords.

Proudest DIY: The library wall that my husband built and filled with 1,000 (actually) books and the branch “chandelier” that I made over the dining table.

Biggest Indulgence: Besides clothes? I can’t really afford an indulgence but if I could, it would be one-of-kind artwork, which I hope to collect over my lifetime.

Best Advice: The best advice I’d give others is to go with items that you love even if they’re not on trend, because that is what makes a home unique. In a time when social media causes a lack of uniqueness in people’s designs, the thing that still makes me gasp is when I walk into a space that is completely unique and personal. Also, design for the space you have. Sometimes you love something, but it might not work with the style of your home so it’s best to hold off on buying it.
