“Our style is a mix between modern farmhouse, eclectic, and a touch of whimsy,” writes Jessica Garvin, the blogger behind the wildly successful blog Garvin & Co. As the mom of three (very cute) young daughters, Jessica shares stories about her family on her website, as well as peeks of her home’s style and more.

From a full kitchen remodel (that cost $20k to complete), to DIY projects, additions and “make-dos,” Jessica and her family have been busy in the year they’ve owned this house just north of Atlanta. She loves to keep her home “like a blank canvas” so she can swap out accessories to update inexpensively, like her bedroom (which has already changed since we photographed it for this tour!). Perhaps most impressively, Jessica was able to incorporate her minimal, farmhouse modern style in a house with traditional ’80s vibes.

Our Style: Our style is a mix between modern farmhouse, eclectic, and a touch of whimsy. I love that anything I buy could literally go in any room of the house. When I bring home a piece of art, I have to ask myself if it will go in my kids’ rooms, my own bedroom, or maybe over the bar cart! I like for our house to also be a blank canvas to change my accessories often, especially for holidays!

Inspiration: I want our home to feel like a cozy coffee shop or an Anthropologie store, I love a mix of old and new!

Favorite Element: All of the natural light and tall ceilings, but the backyard full of horses totally takes the cake.

Biggest Challenge: While our style is very much modern farmhouse, our house is more of a traditional home built in the ’80s. So, our biggest challenge is incorporating the things we love while still trying to preserve the actual style of the home.

What Friends Say: “Whoa, that’s a lot of white. But now I kinda want to paint my walls white!”

Biggest Embarrassment: Our master bathroom (not pictured for a reason). When our house was partially flipped before we moved in, the investors decided to go modern Jetson’s style in the bathroom and put in a standing tub with a faucet that looks like a chrome robot. I guess that rivals the upstairs bathrooms that haven’t been touched in over thirty years and still have dark brown tile on the walls, but, one room at a time!

Proudest DIY: Our kitchen! It was such a labor of love, we did a full kitchen remodel, from the studs all the way to completion in under $20k. I smile every morning when I look at our open shelves and think of all of the hard work that went into them, drilling into that freshly tiled wall with a diamond bit was one of the scariest moments of our renovation, but so very worth it!

Biggest Indulgence: Our 600-square-foot back deck overlooking a horse pasture. Sitting out there every morning for coffee and every evening under the string lights has made every project and worry so worth it.

Best Advice: Find all of the reasons you are in love with your home and let those things be a guide for how you decorate. We love the natural light and want to reflect that with white walls and curtains, we love the hardwood floors so we go minimal with rugs. Let the natural beauty of your home shine without overcluttering with decorations.

Also, take your time with DIY projects. Hire out what is beyond your capabilities. Sometimes we took on small projects that ended up taking all day, when we could have hired a professional to do it in under 30 minutes. Pick your battles!
