A year ago Anissa and Brian were living in the northern suburbs of Indianapolis, in a traditional home, in a traditional subdivision. Though perfectly fine, the home just didn’t feel like their family’s style. So, they listened to their hearts and relocated to their dream neighborhood, where the couple has remodeled and redecorated to better match their personalities. They’ve clearly done something right; a year in and the house they share with their three daughters is famous on Instagram.

After buying this fixer-upper in a historic Indianapolis neighborhood, Brian’s building skills were put to work. “All the rooms on the first floor were cut up due to years of bad remodeling and it just didn’t flow. I wanted the house to serve us and how we live together so we opened it up as much as possible,” Anissa writes.

There are still unfinished rooms and areas of construction (which is why you don’t see any photos of the bathrooms, mudroom or basement) but that’s all part of the process for Brian and Anissa. They work together as a full-service remodeling and design company, so whether it’s a client’s home or their own project, it’s all in a day’s work.

Our Style: Rustic Modern

Inspiration: Nature

Favorite Element: Our dark green sliding door to our mudroom. I didn’t want the “typical barn door” that has been played out. I wanted to take the design to another level by creating a one-of-a-kind door with a modern design color and hardware.

Biggest Challenge: Reconfiguring the main floor living space to make it work for our young family. All the rooms on the first floor were cut up due to years of bad remodeling and it just didn’t flow. I wanted the house to serve us and how we live together so we opened it up as much as possible. Increasing the size of the doorways, adding built-ins and trim work for detail. This allowed for a much more functional and larger kitchen, two living spaces, a mudroom with laundry and also an actual entryway area in to the home where there had previously been a group of closets.

What Friends Say: They love what we have done and the ones that didn’t have the chance to see it pre-remodel are shocked to see the before photos.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our upstairs bathrooms and the basement are gross!! Like really, they are so bad and I cringe every time anyone has to go in them. When we moved in the upstairs bathroom’s tub faucet was broken and only the shower worked so we fixed it so we would be able to take baths. The first time the girls took a bath, water starting pouring out of the kitchen ceiling and we soon realized that the faucet had been rigged that way because the tub overflow went straight in to the wall and down in to the ceiling. Needless to say no one is using that tub again until the entire bathroom is remodeled, which I hope is soon.

Proudest DIY: I think our kitchen is our best DIY. The room was previously a dark and drab dining space and we created a kitchen that is bright and open and functional.

Biggest Indulgence: Our 36″ oven range was our big splurge but so worth it. We use it all the time and Brian has wanted a professional oven for years. He does all the cooking so of course I agreed he should have one, too.

Best Advice: Be prepared that remodels are not fun. I see so many people start remodels excited and then they are miserable by the end. No remodel will go exactly to plan so plan for bumps in the road like unexpected expenses, because you will have them. But if you can make it through the remodel and the inconvenience of living in or traveling to your unfinished home everyday, it’s so worth it in the end.
