This morning, a conversation with co-workers about improvements we want to make to our apartments led to a very good question: how do you DIY in a small space?

Most New York apartments aren’t just small — they also have a problem common to apartments in many other cities, which is a distinct lack of outdoor space. And if there’s an outdoor space but it’s shared, it’s probably going to be frowned upon for you to use the communal courtyard for spray painting table legs or stripping that dresser.

So what’s an enterprising apartment dweller to do? For the answer to this question I thought I’d turn to you, the readers, because, after all, this is a website created for problem-solving apartment dwellers. Do you limit yourself to small projects that can be executed on the fire escape? Tackle projects in mom’s (or a friend’s) garage? Open the windows really wide and hope for the best?
