We do our best to get all/most of our fruits and vegetables from our CSA and local farmer's market. But sometimes you just need a last-minute bunch of carrots. When you shop at a supermarket for your produce, do you know how far it's traveled to get there?
We didn't before checking out this handy transparency from the good people at GOOD magazine. It's meant to tell you how far on average produce travels in the U.S. before it ends up in your hands at the supermarket.
GOOD has compiled the numbers for Iowa, but says that they're generally accurate for wherever you live.
The numbers can be pretty frightening when you consider how bad all of that travel is for the environment. It inspires us to continue doing our best to get our produce from nearby farms.
